The car won't be ready until the 21st but I am now mobile again having picked up a shiny, silver rental car. My first trip with the new rental was to Ocean Beach, the very spot I was intending to go on Tuesday when I was derailed by by another driver. The daytime picture is a view from Newport Avenue at the spot where all the antique stores, tourist shops, and restaurants begin. The sunset picture is one a took several months ago from the beach.

My goal for the morning was to purchase a post-Christmas Christmas gift for my roommate. There is an import store on Ocean Beach called "Rock, Paper, Scissors" that sells, among other great things, cards and prints with fantastical images by a local San Diego artist. My roommate had seen them months ago and almost purchased several to frame, but decided against it. I decided to nix her decision and purchase them for her. I found several small frames that were half-off at Michael's Arts and Crafts so this weekend I'll work on framing them.
Crammed in among the tacos and second-hand stores is a small but bursting-to-capacity bead store called "The Black Bead". I've never bought anything there but the few times I've been in the staff were always friendly. This time was no exception. I'm not a beader, but my roommate is, and to supplement her gift I had purchased a string of brown, glittery beads from a craft store in Redmond and was now looking for a matching pendant. The staff at "The Black Bead" informed me that the beads are made of 'gold stone', so we began sifting through bowls and trays of gold stone looking for an animal pendant that would fit my roommate's character. None of the animals seemed right, but a contorted prism-shaped bead caught my eye and I decided on that one for the pendant (picture to come after my camera battery charges!). The woman who sold it to me thought it looked like a peace sign, which is a good omen I think.
I finished out my trip with a quick walk through my favorite antique mall. I would have stayed longer to pore over the crevices of each vendor's treasures, but the music piping through the overhead speakers was too mournful for my present situation and I soon escaped to the sun and blue skies of the present-day.
The mournful music accentuated my feeling of loneliness that has cropped up since the holidays, but I'm trying to keep myself busy and enjoy the time off. With that in mind, I forced myself off the couch this evening and to the gym for a zealous workout then to a friend's to watch a movie. Now if only I could motivate myself to actually get work done ...
